Have you ever felt stuck? As if you were made for something more? Something bigger? One Christian author described this feeling when he wrote, "We are big dreamers hemmed in, behind and before, by a small job, small church, small town, small life.”
We are, generally speaking, aspirational people. We have a strong desire for success and achievement. Yet this longing for more can cause us to overlook or even look down on small and seemingly insignificant things.
First century Jews were expecting a benevolent, all-powerful king, politically conquering the Romans, religiously reorienting the hearts of the people back to God and his holy city of Jerusalem, socially bringing about justice for the poor and oppressed people of God. It would be huge!
Yet, the kingdom of God had already come with the arrival of Jesus. They just didn’t recognize it. As we continue on in our salvation story we’ll see that It wasn’t more obvious because its beginnings were small and hidden. However, it would and will one day become very large with unmistakable influence.
Don’t despise humble beginnings. As you set big goals for a new year, take heart accomplishing small, Spirit-enabled, kingdom-minded tasks.
