In case you hadn’t heard, this Tuesday there’s an election going on. We’re blessed to live in the oldest democracy in the world, which means that we have the privilege of casting a vote for our preferred candidates and our preferred policy measures. Everyone in the community comes together to express the collective will of the people. It sounds so wonderful.
Yet, we are a deeply divided nation. There are blue states and red states. The R’s and the D’s. Pundits of every stripe say this is the most consequential election of our lifetime. Protests and counter-protests.
Some people are political junkies. Others just want to crawl in a hole. “Wake me up when it’s over!” How should Christians respond to such division?
In the previous episode of our salvation story we read that Jesus’ return is imminent. When he comes he will recognize and reward his faithful servants but render judgement upon the unfaithful. Now, as Jesus continues teaching, he reveals that this yet future reality creates present division, which demands that people decide. No one can remain neutral. Instead, we make daily choices about whom we will serve.
