And His Name Shall Be Called: Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6; Colossians 3:15-17 (ESV) - Pastor Tim Kroeker

Colossians 3:15:

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.”

Around 700 BC the Old Testament prophet Isaiah wrote about a coming king. He wouldn’t be just any ordinary king. He would sit on the throne of his father David, and of his kingdom there would be no end. His name would be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. This Advent season we’re considering each of these five names ascribed to the most consequential person who ever lived, Jesus.

The last of these names that we’ll consider on the final eve of Advent is “Prince of Peace.” Of course it’s common to associate peace with Christmas, the feeling of peace you might have in the glow of warm Christmas lights or the calming tones of Silent Night playing subtly in the background as you sip hot cocoa. However, these dreamy notions of peace aren’t what Isaiah had in mind at all. The promises that God had made to David and to the people Israel were earthly, territorial, and national. Peace on earth is not some enchanting tale. It is real and concrete. The Prince of Peace revolutionizes our relationship with God and with others.
