Few topics of conversation generate more confusion than religion. There are so many competing philosophies. Is it even possible to really know God? And what about Jesus? Who was he and what did he actually say about himself? Answering these questions was the very reason Luke wrote his gospel; so that his readers might have certainty about the things they had been taught. In Luke chapter 24 we read that two of Jesus’ disciples were talking amongst themselves, confused about all that had taken place. They had hoped that Jesus was the Messiah of Israel but the Jewish leaders had him crucified at the hands of the Romans. Now, three days later some women were saying that he was alive. As these two disciples walked and talked along the road to the village of Emmaus, they were joined by Jesus himself who opened their eyes, making all things clear to them. Here at the conclusion of Luke’s salvation story we see how all of us, even 2000 years later, can move from confusion to confidence about all the things that we have been taught.
