Understanding The Authoritative Final Words of Jesus
Written By Laurie Cosgrove
Matthew 28:16-20
Matthew 28:19a:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations..."
After the resurrection, Jesus gathers his disciples for an important announcement. He reasserts his plan to establish a people for himself amongst the nations, the church. His church will be established through the making of disciples, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey all that he has commanded. This is commonly referred to as "The Great Commission." The great commission isn’t about missions, it’s about the church. The great commission isn’t just for missionaries. Rather, it contains the final authoritative words of Jesus for all those who believe in Him. Making disciples of all peoples is the singular, unifying mission of the church. The very reason that we exist.
