Growing in obedience to His commands

Genesis 22:1-19 (ESV) - Pastor Tim Kroeker

John 14:15:

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

The second variable in our discipleship equation is obedience. We become more and more like Jesus as we grow in our knowledge of him through his word and then grow in our obedience to that word. Genesis 22 contains the disturbing story of when God tested Abraham, telling him to offer up as a burnt offering his son, his only son, the son he loved, Isaac.

Though Abraham was indeed the father of our faith, throughout his life, he had failed to trust God. But in this final, capstone moment, Abraham passes the test, demonstrating complete faith in God’s ability to provide. Abraham’s obedience showed that his love for God and for His commands surpassed everything else. Abraham was then exceedingly blessed for his obedience. This is precisely what Jesus demands of all those who wish to be a disciple, a love for him that results in obedience no matter the cost. For that, we will be rewarded.
